We can already feel the chill in the air; the cold, refreshing winds at night are enough to send us into hibernation and the morning routine is getting longer now we need to defrost the car first. Most of us are already preparing for it. The warm clothes are out, festive shopping is in full swing and we start to make plans for the holiday season. But, have you thought about your pet? Have you made all the relevant preparations for them, too? Where do you even begin?
Pet Tags
When the cold winds begin to blow, we humans and animals alike are drawn to warmer, comforting climes. While we know better than to take cover in the nearest hidey-hole, our pets often do not.
Should your pet run off while on your daily walk during the winter, the weather could severely impact their safe return as they try to take shelter and find warmth; you can limit the risk of not finding your pet safely this winter by ensuring their collar and pet tag are in good condition and secured firmly.
All dogs are required by law to wear a dog tag, so it is imperative that your details are up to date and the tag is in good condition at all times.
Vaccinations
Winter brings a plethora of health problems for all, including your pet. Much like how we can catch a cold, pets too can suffer from common ailments when the cold weather hits.
We would recommend paying a visit to the vet with your pet before winter takes hold. Pets are susceptible to diseases such as heart problems, toothaches and arthritis amongst many other illnesses, but a check-up with the doctor can keep these problems at bay, or recommend treatment as necessary.
Wardrobe
For many people, clothes for pets – especially dogs – are merely a fashion statement and a waste of money, but during the winter months, smaller pets can really benefit from wearing a jacket. Don’t overdo it with the food, though, as being overweight can lead to serious health issues.
There are many other ways to ensure your pets stay healthy during the colder months of the year, but by ensuring they have pet tags, a warm sweater or coat, the right food and vaccinations in place, your pet will make it through unscathed!
